I am always surprised at the type of questions people ask online when they want gift ideas. They usually say something like “I need a gift for my nephew” or “What would a man a certain age like”. It is impossible to answer questions that are that broad. All nephews and men of a certain age will not be interested in the same things.

No wonder they find selecting a gift challenging.

Each of us can select perfect gifts if we pay attention to the desires of the people in our lives. Here are some truly useful tips that can ensure whatever you give will delight the person receiving it.

Start by thinking about what your intended gift recipient enjoys. For example:

  • Are they into sports? Do they follow any particular teams?
  • What are their hobbies?
  • Where do they work?
  • Do they travel?
  • Do they collect anything specific?
  • Are they currently fixing up their home?
  • Do they like to read books or magazines?

Another great way to know what someone would simply love is to be observant:

  • Listen – Many people verbally indicate what they would like to receive. Some even TELL US what they would really like to have.
  • Believe – Do not discount what someone specifically asks for even if you don’t think it is a great gift idea!
  • Observe – Watch what friends and family look at in magazines, on commercials, when driving around, or when out shopping.

While these may seem like simple ideas they can really make a difference. Here are a couple of real life examples where the above ideas were key to successful gift giving:

  • Sam noticed that every time they picked up parts at Home Depot his co-worker would look at a particular wrench set. He even mentioned that “some day” he was going to buy it. The wrenches were inexpensive and he could have easily purchased them himself but he never did. (This is common.) Sam bought the wrench set for his friend’s birthday and he was thrilled. Even though they were inexpensive they were “just what he wanted” – and the giver (Sam) knew that in advance.
  • A friend mentioned that they really wanted to try those Kinoki Detox Foot Pads. Even though the buyer thought that was a really strange gift idea she was wise enough to seize the opportunity to give something she knew I wanted. She even included a card with a strange looking cat holding a fish with a candle on it that read “Well, it seemed to make sense when I bought it. Anyway, Happy Birthday.” She added “Well this is a “strange” birthday present but it was what you wanted! Now that is a true friend.

How many times have you wished your family or significant other would give you what you specifically asked for instead of what THEY thought you should want? The key to giving the perfect gift is to give what the receiver wants to receive – not what you think they should like!

There is still time for you to give the best gift you’ve ever given by noticing what someone loves. We’ll be adding posts with specific gifts and also ideas for people with particular loves. Want some ideas for your specific challenge? Leave us a comment and we’ll write a post just for you!

I struggle buying gifts for other people, I usually end up buying gifts I would like – but then realise they might not like/want it.

Hi Shane,

You have plenty of company as I continually see people asking what someone else would like with so little information about them that a real answer would be impossible.

The tips in this post really can assist you to figure out what almost anyone would like to have. Some may still not seem really appreciative; however, if you put some thought into what they should like and answer the questions I’ve suggested you will find it much easier.

Welcome Antony,

Some people are good at coming up with great gift ideas and others just aren’t paying attention to what people around them would love to have. Most people who have great gift ideas love to share them so asking them is another great way to get ideas.

I agree, really listening to people will shed light on what a perfect gift would be. There’s nothing worse than giving a gift and have the recipient open it and look perplexed – like “what were you thinking?’

LOL. Barbara, it is so obvious why your blog is so popular – your words paint a picture. I immediately saw a person who just opened a gift-wrapped package and had that distinctive perplexed look on their face.

It’s almost time now. Well, I normally just ask the person what they really like to receive. What’s important for me is that they will enjoy and use their gifts and not keep it hidden away.

That is one reason I’m a big fan of practical gifts that are used regularly like business card holders, wallets and many other items people use every day.

The groomsmen gifts page is an easy way to get more gift ideas even if you aren’t looking for a wedding party gift because it shows most of the types of gifts on one page.

The article addresses a common problem when it comes to giving gifts. We usually have trouble to get in the place of others, and we ended up buying items that we would like for ourselves.

True. From now on I will think more on what the person likes when I’ll give gifts because there have been occasions where I just get confused and decide to give normal items or items I think should be given. It’s never easy to judge anyone’s likes or dislikes and it takes time to know what the other person really wants.

I will this time hopefully will rely more on my observing powers.

I’ve got a reputation for being good at gift buying. Which is lovely but does get a bit stressful over time. Some people are easy, you just need to know their hobbies. For example my Dad loves outdoor walking while my mum is much more into indoor crafts and a good DVD.

The important thing is to remember the gift isn’t for you. I find it really satisfying when you get the right gift.

Hi Fiona,

You made an excellent point that many people fail to follow: “The important thing to remember is the gift is NOT for you” – it is for THEM. Just realizing that will help many people. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

The key to giving a perfect gift is learning a person’s need at any point in time. I have applied that formula for quite a while and it has worked been working so far.

I just used the url above of my favorite online store.

They would be a perfect place to shop for Father’s day.

They are a cut above most hobbyist shops. They deal with new and collectible Lego and Trains.

I know my Dad loves this place.

I love what you are doing here as well.

Heard from you through our profs, and them through Gail Gardner.

Let’s make everyone happy.
