1947 Zippo Car
Did you know Zippo lighters are collectibles? Have you ever wondered why? While searching for the answer to that question we came across the Zippo car and found this great photo and many others of Zippo Car number 2.
The whereabouts of Zippo Car number 1 is still a mystery. It was shipped to Toohey Motors in Pittsburgh for repairs and forgotten about for years. When Zippo tried to locate it they found Toohey Motors had gone under and in spite of searches the car has never been found.
While few of us ever saw the original Zippo car all of us has seen our share of Zippo lighters. Founded during the Great Depression, anyone who smoked is likely to have one. My parents both did. Even though I don’t smoke and never have or will, it doesn’t hurt to have a fire source around. You never know when you might need one.
Zippo became huge during the World War II when millions of soldiers carried Zippo lighters into battle. They still offer dozens of military theme designs. Although silver and gold are the best sellers, Zippo makes an amazing array of lighters for specific interests from Brands of Autos and Motorcycles to Careers to hobbies. If you have a niche site you might find Zippo lighters to offer your readers.

I’ve never known why they were collectibles until now. I’ve also never seen or heard about the zippo cars, but they are really cool. Good post, thanks for sharing.
Great Engravings…Zippo lighters are not only for smokers. Think of all of the occasions that you need a lighter. Pulling out a personalized Zippo is all style! Love it!

I’ve never heard anything of zippo cars, but it would interesting if someone did manage to find the “zippo car number 1″
As for the “collectible thing”, I also have a couple of old zippos from my dad’s collection. They’re perfect for centerpieces or showroom displays.
Yeah, Zippo car is something new to me. I am glad to know that you are not attracted to smoking despite having both parents in possession of zippo lighters! There are good reasons to stay away from Smoking but yes Zippo lighter can come handy on other occassions like to show Style!

I never knew there was a Zippo car! I was thinking that this would be a great item to customize with a name and logo, then give it away in a contest in exchange for subscriptions, tweets, etc. about your website. The winner of the Zippo would then be doing advertising for you anytime they used the lighter while in the company of others. Really a win-win situation for everyone.

I wonder will Zippo enlarge it’s product line from lighters to Cars. Imagine that somebody goes to a car dealer and ask “Gimme a Zippo”.
